Storms never last/
Do they, baby?/
Bad times all pass/
With the wind.
– Jessi Colter, Storms Never Last
This morning we woke to watch coverage of the aftermath. It is all so convoluted that it is almost impossible to pick apart what is going on. Bridges are destroyed. Water is everywhere. Houses are completely gone. In some cases, all you can see are platforms. Galveston is completely uninhabitable. They are taking those who stayed off the island. From looking at the pictures, it is almost impossible to tell what you are looking at. Everything looks the same. Exact locations are impossible to pinpoint. Completely flooded areas littered with massive amounts of debris all look the same. When I went to bed the night before, I thought the storm hadn’t been too bad. Even though we saw pieces of the road floating broken in the water. Even though we saw buildings burning to the ground. Even though the waves were slamming against the seawall with brute force. Geraldo was able to survive by hanging on to a palm tree. It makes absolutely no sense. When we saw the footage today, I wondered over and over again how he survived by doing that. So weird. From the looks of things on this day, Galveston is practically gone.
Today is Em’s birthday. The day of what was supposed to be her cowboy party. Here it has been a lazy day. Mom and dad went out driving around again. When they returned, they brought cake and we had a little party.
In some ways, I am getting frustrated. I am ready to go home. I really need some time to myself. I am tired and agitated. In other ways, though, I am doing well. I am surprised by the energy I have. There is no pressure on me here. There is nothing I can do about anything. My responsibilities, for a short amount of time, the things that have been weighing me down, are lifted. What seemed like a huge inconvenience at the time has turned out to be an amazing blessing.
